The mizuhiki (traditional Japanese knot made from washi paper in twisted string) used in this design is called Awaji-musubi. It is named Awaji because the knots resembles the abalone (awabi) of the shellfish. It is tied in a way that it is difficult to untie and because of this it is used to wish that something “may last for many years to come”. It is especially used for wedding celebrations because it looks gorgeous.
